Some of the older ATA PCI cards did not have large drive support because of the controller on the card so it doesn't always solve that issue.
The PCI controller cards do completely bypass the onboard controllers but may still suffer the same limitations depending on which controller chipset is used. I know very little about the PCI SATA cards but I thought they all had large drive support. I'm sure Harry knows more about it than I do.
