Issues Installing OS 10.3 Panther on a G4 - 2009/06/22 12:33
I have a Digital Audio G4 533mhz dual with 1.5 gb ram and a 9GB drive that was running OS 9.3 and just bought Panther 10.3 to do a complete install and ran into some problems. Looking at the install tips from this web site and from what I've seen on Apple's site it should have been an easy process and I'm stuck.
My plan was to not upgrade but do a new install over 9.3 and that's where the problem starts. when running the install CD I check through each step and at step 4 (?) where you select the drive or location to install OS 10.3 the current drive icon shows witgh a red dot and exclamation point (!), Unable to install message and that the drive partition must be smaller than 7gb size. also that OS 10.x must be on the drive to upgrade. I see that the next step (5) is select the type of install, fulll or upgrade.
So I decide to add a spare 20GB drive I have laying around and setup a smaller partition and get the same message. During each of these I run the disk verify/repair tool to make sure the drive is ok. Both drives check out.
I decide to partition my original drive as 2 x 4.4Gb drives, disk verify and try installing again. Similar error, red dot ! and message that earlier verison of OS 10 must be already installed to upgrade. I know that re-partitioning my orgial drive will wipe out whatever OS 9.3 is on the drive and I can reinstall if needed. What do I need to do to get the system to let me install Panther?
Thanks, Jim
