Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/27 18:08 Apple's next generation MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard" includes a backup program called "Time Machine" that will automatically backup your hard drive to a secondary drive. For notebook systems, many probably would find it convenient to use a "dock" that contained a second hard drive like those used with Apple's long ago discontinued PowerBook Duo line.

What would you think about the prospect of future Apple notebooks offering a docking system to use with Time Machine? If Apple were to introduce a "dock", what features would you like it to include?

Re:Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/28 00:55 I would like a dock very much, I used to have an old Duo but it was too slow in those days to use as my main computer. Just hook up your MacBook to the dock and have Time Machine kick in while you are asleep every night. I would like one or two hard drives in the dock and some extra ports and express card slots would be great. - Mike

Re:Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/28 10:15 Cool. I am new to the Mac and had not seen the Duos before. If it did not cost too much and was simple I would get a dock. Would not want to lose my photos and videos.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/28 13:53 Time Machine is a CYA addition to Mac OS X. Pros will use it and like it but pros are already backing up everything with existing software. This just will make it easier. Consumers are not going to pay extra for a drive to backup, they say they will, but they won't. With it built into the OS though Apple can tell people that they should have used Time Machine if they bitch about a system crash. I think it's smart.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/28 14:00 I do not think Apple will release a dock. Docks make things more complicated and Apple is all about making things simpler. They have not released one in so long, why would they start now??

Re:Discussion Q&A - Dock & Time Machine? - 2006/08/28 19:18 I think consumers will pay to back up as long as it is afordable. I always back up my music, photos, and videos to DVD-R's.
