Most combo drives will work in a Mac, but may not be Mac bootable or native OS X burn support. Roxio's Toast burning app usually works with any brand. Lite-On is a good inexpensive brand tha boots and is supported although the retail box never mentions Macs. Most boxes never mention Mac compatibility but are compatible in many instances.
If you have a brand/model in mind, check out XLR8yourMac's drive compatibility database for many user reports.

Many burners can be made OS/iTunes burn utility supported by patching them with the Patchburn application.

Your boot problem is, as mentioned a kernel panic. Usually a RAM issue in my experience. Try removing all but one stick of RAM at a time trying each one. You may find the culprit there. OS X is very particular about RAM specs being correct
Your hard drive or other hardware may be the cause but RAM is much more likely.
