from pc to mac - 2006/08/02 17:36 i have recently been given a power mac g4 800. there is no keyboard or mouse. i was also told the cd-r drive doesn't work and there was no hard drive. no big deal on both accounts (i know). but, i am a pc guy so i don't know about macs.

(1) instead of replacing the cd-r i want to put a dvd-rw drive. do i have to purchase a specific brand of dvd-rw drive or will any old one work? i was looking at the store the other day and all the internal drives said windows under the requirements.

(2) it turns out the computer has a hard drive after all, so i powered it up. i get the tone, followed by a white screen with the apple logo, then a black screen that reads "You need to restart your computer. Hold downthe Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." (this is also written in several other languages. this is all it does. i have tried powering it down and up several times.

has anyone seen this? what does it mean?

(3) also back to the hard drive...if i replace it (or buy extra storage) can i just buy any old hard drive or do i have to put a specific brand/model in? the hard drive currently installed says ATA66-40gb.

thanks for any insight you can provide.
