This worked for me on an old imac with a 10 gig hard drive
You don't need to erase the drive unless you want to boot into OS 9 and the OS 9 boot option was not checked during OS X's installation.
OS 9 can still be installed when booted from the OS 9 CD and doing a clean install which will leave the OS X System alone. This is the same thing you would do with OS 9 and you get a "previous system folder" It should work in OS X without doing that.
It's probably best to install OS X first with a fresh install and check the OS 9 Bootable option. Then install OS 9 afterwards. That way your drive is formatted for OS X.
It will work either way though.
