G4 867X2 MDD - 2009/10/11 21:57 I was loading 10.5 on my trusty G4 and when it came time to restart it would not, it did shut down but would not restart, I could not find any voltage on any of the power supply going to ground, but is there a pin combo that should show voltage, I see a power supply would cost more than a used MDD on eBay, I don’t want to throw my money away on a power supply before I buy one, I did open the power supply and verified 120v inside so I know it is not the cord, but I remember there was one or two pins on the plug to the motherboard that would register voltage when the computer was off and that was used to start the boot process? It did not take the hard drives, so I know it is not that also. A curious note is my ATI Radeon 9800 pro was also damaged, but I don’t know how bad, when I opened the case, the fan was melted? Anyway thank you for your help!!!

Re:G4 867X2 MDD - 2009/10/12 15:09 9800 Mac Pro cards do have a fan problem and it sounds like the machine has overheated and fried the card. If you do a Google of failed 'ATI Radeon 9800' you will find this happens frequently.

Is the machine plugged in through a surge protector by any chance? If so this could be your problem. If not, have you taken the power supply apart and checked for any short or burn marks?

Here are some trouble shooting links:-

Re:G4 867X2 MDD - 2009/10/12 22:29 Thanks Harry, the ATI card still works, and the power supply is shot and I think it may have taken the MB with it, and I've already ordered a replacement MacPro, it will be a few weeks before it gets here, my trusty Pismo is covering for now, I forgot how slow this thing can be!!
As far as a UPS, all my computers have them, my TV's and sound equipment have them also, I live in the desert area of southern California, I learned several years ago when it took my first Mac out, it was a brown out and the power supply went south as well as my TVs, they told me at the TV repair shop that was the problem, I never trusted them, this time I don't know why, BUT O WELL!! ;~)'

I have a few power supply's lying around I might try to rig one to see if it will boot, at least I don't think it would hurt, I just got to get by the start button?
