iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/09 05:59 Alas, my iBook suddenly shuts down, and when rebooted, has a 1969 date. Is this a Motherboard issue, or a hard drive issue, or neither?
Thanks.

Re:iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/09 17:13 Does it keep shutting down ?

Running off the battery ?

That could be a number of things that would cause that and impossible to tell from the information provided.

The date reverting to 1969 is an indicator of a dead battery. The G4 ibook does not have a PRAM battery to keep date and time but uses a capacitor on the board to keep date and time during battery swaps. It's possible that cap is bad.

Is your battery any good ? Eventually the cap will loose the date and time if your battery is dead.

Re:iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/09 20:39 Thank you for your reply. Usually, when the battery is running out of power, it messages me that I am on reserve power before it goes to "sleep."
During these recent events, the iBook suddenly and completely shuts itself down, and instead of hitting any key to awaken it, it must be re-booted from the power button, and then I get the message that it's time is prior to 2000 and must be reset. There is no clicking noise, i.e. hard drive, and no memory loss. The original battery was replaced in 2007, so this one is about 2 years old.

Re:iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/09 21:47 Generally with Macs if there is a sudden loss of power, eg a power outage, the date reverts to its original date. Your iBook is suddenly and completely shutting itself down. This rather indicates that a complete loss of power is occurring. I suggest that you check thoroughly battery connections etc.

Re:iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/28 07:15 Thanks to all for your assistance. I have observed that it doesn't suddenly shut down when connected to a power source, and I have re-inserted the battery. We'll see what happens.
Thanks again.
Mike

Re:iBook G4/1.33/14" - 2009/09/28 17:19 Originally the battery life from fully charged was 5/6 hours. Maybe with time that capacity has reduced dramatically as all rechargables do. If you want to keep it running via battery, perhaps time for investment in a new battery.

A spare is always handy.
