Running off the battery ?

That could be a number of things that would cause that and impossible to tell from the information provided.

The date reverting to 1969 is an indicator of a dead battery. The G4 ibook does not have a PRAM battery to keep date and time but uses a capacitor on the board to keep date and time during battery swaps. It's possible that cap is bad.

Is your battery any good ? Eventually the cap will loose the date and time if your battery is dead.
