G5 Tower - 2009/08/28 20:46 Since Snow Leopard is now on the market I'm considering to 'upgrading to a G5'. Model: PowerMac G5/2GHz DC, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb HD, Superdrive
Anyone any thoughts on this machine?

Re:G5 Tower - 2009/08/29 07:34 As long as you don't plan on running Snow Leopard on the G5 the 2GHz DP G5 is a pretty good machine. OS 10.6 is Intel only but will make the prices of G5's drop faster soon enough.

I have no personal experience with that model but I've never heard anything bad about it. The G5's I would avoid are the water cooled ones and the very early models with slower bus speeds.

Re:G5 Tower - 2009/08/29 17:12 If you can find one, suggest a Dual Core rather than a DP. Run DDR2 memory which is faster, PCIE slots and graphic card and available in 2GHz, 2.3 and 2.5 but suggest avoiding 2.5 as they are liquid cooled which did cause problems.

Leopard OS X.5 runs very nice with adequate memory, say 4GB, and Leopard will be around as long as there are PPC users. Judging by the folk who still use OS 8.1 with G3 iMacs, a long l-o-n-g time!

Re:G5 Tower - 2009/08/29 22:38 Thanks Krowmagnun and Harry. Running 8.1 on a G3 strewth. I find that running OS9.2 on the wife's G3 is slow.
