Trying to install Leopard on my G4... - 2009/08/27 15:57My machine details:
Machine Name: iMac Machine Model: PowerMac6,1 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3) Number Of CPUs: 1 CPU Speed: 1 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.5.9f1
Everytime I try to install Leopard the computer stalls on the reboot... just the apple screen with little swirly dots... for hours! Help! Is it my drive? It has no problem with other DVD's... I have tried choosing the DVD from preferences and rebooting.... same problem.
Other DVDs work fine.
HELP PLEASE!

Re:Trying to install Leopard on my G4... - 2009/08/27 20:50Where did you get the Leopard DVD from ? Is it a full retail version ( dark with a big X on the DVD )or is it a machine specific version ( grey with no X )? To install on your machine without problems you should be using the retail DVD. And you should be using one that is designed for machines that use the PPC CPU and not an Intel Mac computer.

New symptom - 2009/08/28 03:50It has a big X, I dont know it came with the computer... from eBay.
I got the DVD to boot and started the install but it stopped and gave me a message about not having enough data to proceed with the install, and asked me to check the install media and the internet connection???

Re:New symptom - 2009/08/28 16:43Sounds like your eBay seller has included a disc from another machine.
Retail full install DVDs are black as stewieno1 pointed out. If yours is a silver grey coloured disc it is a system restore disc that will work generally ONLY with the machine it came with.
Many unscrupulous sellers list these as 'drop-in' and various system names. Others just burn a copy of the OS onto a plain disc. Is your disc Dual Layer even?
