Electricity Supply Outage - 2009/08/09 02:33 Hi David, Krowmagnum Friday morning there was another 4hr outage with a resultant 'cleanup'. What I've done to overcome the problem is to use a heavy duty car battery, an inverter/converter (DC to AC) and a battery charger. It's working ok. Presumably the battery will last longer than four hours before needing to be charged.

Re:Electricity Supply Outage - 2009/08/09 18:53 We had a power outage here when crows built a nest on the transformer that feeds my house, we did not really pay attention to it until one day on my way home, I was less than a block away from my house when we had a desert rain, just a light mist of rain, then, while I was watching that transformer wondering if the rain was going to react with the birds nest, poof, it looked like a match stick in the sand, the perfect little candle, I thought, I must get to my computers and verify all is well, thank God they were, then my wife asked me how long will the UPS continue to work on our fish tanks, well that turned out to be about 20 minutes, (heaters and air pumps take a lot) I, like you connected it to a car battery and it worked for another 8+ hours, yes it took more than 10 hours to replace the power pole, transformer and secondary wires to my house, so a 12 volt car battery will work, the reason the car battery only worked for 8+ hours is the UPS burned it self out, the company I purchased it from stated they were not designed to run continuously, my new one will handle the load better, and some of the UPS manufactures are making them for fish aquariums which has a problem with a square wave signal (the air pumps), they work better with a normal sign wave like we get from our power outlets! You will have to change the batteries out about every other year, like I tell my wife, cheep insurance!
Oh by the way, all fish lived, wife’s happy, and when she is happy, so am I!
