G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/27 21:31 Oops.
This is in the wrong place.
Copied it to Power Mac G3/G4/G5 forum.
====================================

Hello,
I have dug out my G4 from storage and tried to get it running.
I have it connected to a Sony Trinitron Multiscan monitor.
I hear the start up chime, but the monitor stays blank. The power light starts out green, then switches to "power save".
The video card is an ATI 8500, with a vga & dvi port.
I have tried both ports, the dvi with an adapter.
I have also tried an ATI Rage 128 Pro card with the vga port only.
The G4 is a agp 400 or 450.
I think it is running OS 9.
Is there an issue with the G4 card and the Trinitron monitor?
Would I be able to use a non-Apple LCD, (PC) monitor with this combination?

Re:G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/27 23:37 You may need to replace the PRAM battery first.

Re:G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/28 15:55 Thanks Stewie.
A new battery was installed, and pram was reset.
Nada.
The Sony monitor is a Multiscan SF ll, if that helps.
Do you think there would be any problems with a non-apple LCD monitor?
Thanks.

Re:G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/28 18:26 If your video card supports the resolution of the monitor or monitors that you have tried and you have the right connections then it doesn't matter what computer the screens are connected to.
I think the problem is more with the computer itself.
I'd look at all the internal connections eg remove all the RAM and reinstall it, disconnect the hard drive and reconnect etc.
I'd also look at getting an OSX disc ( preferably 10.2, 10.3 )and try booting up from that. It should also be a retail or black disc not a machine specific disc or grey.

Re:G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/29 14:53 The Sony monitor is a CRT right ? You should have no issues with a Sony Multiscan CRT.

Non-Apple LCDs are usually not a problem unless the native resolution is not supported by the video card.

First try ad boot from a disk. Any disk that is bootable on your G4 will be good enough to test the video output.

If you get video booting from a disk then there is a problem in the OS itself.

Also try booting into Open Firmware to reset the NVRAM.

Boot holding command/option/O/F keys until you get the prompt.

If you get video type:

reset-nvram
Press Return

reset-all
Press Return

This will reset all of the PRAM and NVRAM settings to default.

Re:G4 & trinitron monitor - 2009/07/29 16:00 I'll give it all a try.
Stewie - I believe that the card(s) supports the monitors resolution.
krowmagnum - yes it is an old crt.
Thanks for your input everyone.
