resetting password? - 2009/07/15 16:35 A friend just bought an ibook on ebay, but the seller doens't know what the password is. She can't reset with new one since she doesn't know the old one.

I was told there is a way to go around and 'reset' the owner of the computer and so put in a new password..?

Anyone know how to do this?

thanks.

Re:resetting password? - 2009/07/15 17:25 Easiest way is to boot from the Leopard disc and change password. it is possible without the install DVD but requires a bit of fiddling with terminal:-

Re:resetting password? - 2009/07/16 09:53 If you don't have an install disk and since it's Leopard on an iBook from eBay it most likely means you didn't get one. Take it to a local Apple Store or repair shop and they should do it for you at no cost. Just explain the situation and they should help you. Or borrow a retail Leopard disk from a friend. Machine specific disks for Macbooks, etc probably will not boot the iBook to reset the password.

I hope you didn't bid any "extra" for the OS on the iBook. This is exactly why you should never pay any extra money for a new "installed OS" on a used Mac from eBay or anywhere else. You should leave appropriate feedback for the seller as well if you got no disk.
