Re:What kind of G4 do I have??? - 2009/06/26 17:06 As Krowmagnum, advised the external FW drive is for emergency use. You can copy your OS and all files to it using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, and do a back up on say a weekly basis.

Then if the internal HDD dies (heaven forbid) you can boot from the external and use it to install the OS and all files on to a new internal drive.

Re:What kind of G4 do I have??? - 2009/06/27 16:06 Thank you all for your help and input. I understand a bit better now. You mentioned cloning and someone else mentioned cloning software. Can you recommend any cloning software in particular? Also, any reason why the Raptor is your recommendation for the internal drive? Thanks!!

Re:What kind of G4 do I have??? - 2009/06/27 17:04 Krowmagnum no doubt had three reasons for suggesting the Raptor 10,000RPM.

Speed!

Speed!

Speed!

I personally prefer Carbon Copy Cloner - it's donationware and fully functional for free (donation suggested if you like it)

SuperDuper is the other popular cloning app and it's free version is limited. The Paid version has a couple of advantages over CCC but not worth the cost in my opinion.

Compare both to see what suits you best:

As harry mentioned there is one advantage to the Raptor drives...Speed.

Re:What kind of G4 do I have??? - 2009/06/28 16:58 I for one prefer SuperDuper even if it does cost, from memory, $29.00 for the full registered version. Do a back up every week of all files, system and other, and the registered version has a Smart Backup facility and does the full trick in a shade under ten minutes by comparing the drives and writing new files only.

By all means use either program but backing up is most important.
