Will this combo work? - 2009/06/14 12:38 O Mac Gurus - please bear with me on this question if it's too noobish, I have 20+ years of experience with PC's but only a few months with Macs, having purchased a used PowerMac G4 (this model with the VGA/DVI port card). I recently bought a beautiful 15" flat-screen Apple display at a yard sale; its connector is shown here. After the fact, I realized that this monitor isn't going to connect to this G4; I'm not knowledgable enough about this system yet to know for sure but will a new video card such as the one shown here work with my computer and allow me to use that monitor?

The monitor does not have a power cable - would it be able to pull power from my G4 with this card?

ADDENDUM: This appears to be the monitor I bought, though I can't see its connector in the photo.

Thanks to all in advance.
Thanks, Anna

Re:Will this combo work? - 2009/06/14 16:42 The display you have purchased has an ADC (Apple Direct Connect) fitting and should plug straight in to the AGP card in the Power Mac G4 500, which is probably a Gigabit Ethernet model. They came standard with the card you are looking at purchasing, a Rage 128 Pro so check it out.

If it has some other card, the Rage 128 Pro on eBay as you can see has the ADC fitting.

ADC has the advantage of the connection carrying power, picture and USB all in the one cable. Alas for new machines it is necessary to use an ADC/DVI connector but you need not worry about that as yet.

Have a look at the fittings on your G4 as I am sure you should simply plug and play as the 15" LCD was the partner for your tower.

Re:Will this combo work? - 2009/06/14 16:47 Wasted my time as you have previously got all this from Mac Forums.

Re:Will this combo work? - 2009/06/14 20:09 Wow. This was unexpected and quite unsettling. I find your second and third response to be extremely rude to a newbie on this forum. I purchased both items separately and both second-hand, and the computer does NOT have the correct connector for this monitor - I thought I was completely clear on that. My intent was to see if I could definitevely answer the question of whether or not a video card similar to the one whose link I posted would function appropriately for this computer/monitor setup - i.e. would the computer then provide the power for this monitor. I can't help it that there are apparently several versions of monitor/computer combinations for Macs of this period, and I've only been playing with them for about three months. Yes, I've been looking at other Mac forums as well - I don't know about you but to me, the $60 I just spent on this monitor could easily have been spent to greater effect elsewhere and I have limited time, I did not think it a crime to reinforce my search for answers on other fora, especially as I have often experienced delays of several days when looking for a response (if any are forthcoming at all). If you feel that you have wasted your time, then so be it - I shall never post a question here again and will ask to have my name removed. Thanks for your absolute and total lack of courtesy, in that you felt it necessary to post "I've wasted my time" TWICE - what, you didn't think I got that the first time? So much for the supposed "friendliness" of the Mac community.
