Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/22 21:33 OK, well, I have found A problem, but, not sure if it's THE problem.

When I unscrewd the Memory hatch, there was quite a bit of spring pressure pushing on the hatch cover. When I lifted it off, the top stick of Ram was sitting up at about a 15-20 degree angle with some spring force. On further examination, the clips that are supposed to hold it in, are broken (well, the left hand one is missing, and, the other is not latching in to hold the stick down)

Any possibility that the Ram stick being pressed against the cover is causing the problem????

Are these broken/missing clips a common problem? Are they obtainable, and or, easily replaced????

Thanks again for all the help.

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/24 19:50 Well, I pulled the top memory stick out, and the thing has been working fine with no KPs for about 6 hours now.

Are the Memory slots and or the clip/bracket thingys available as a part that can be replaced????

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/26 14:06 Hi, I'm not completely familiar with that model but think you could try a 2G module in the lower slot. Then test , test , for at least several days. If all works well the you can sell the 1G sticks to recover most if not all of the cost of the 2G stick. Anyone more knowledgeable please jump in and help out. Ralph ( I believe the only way to repair the memory socket is to replace the board--very expensive) Another possibility would be to use a piece of non-conductive foam between the top stick and the cover and hope that would keep the memory locked in place.Ralph

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/26 15:34 Glad you figured out the cause of the KPs, but I'm sorry to say that I don't know whether you can replace the clips. Maybe krow knows?

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/27 09:03 I can almost guarantee 100% that the kernel panics were caused by that memory stick not seating properly.

I'm not familiar with the last G4 PB's so I don't know if the metal clip can be replaced (usually not) but finding one would be a problem. If the clip is broken off the only way to repair it is to replace the memory slot and that isn't easy. A new slot would need to be soldered on the board and the general fix for that is to replace the entire logic board.

But you may be able to get by without the clip by using a shim to hold the chip down.

What I would do is put a non-conductive piece of rubber or plastic on top of the chip and push it down with the RAM access panel. As long as it's seated it should work fine.

You cannot get a 2GB stick that will work in that G4 as far as I know so replacing the 1GB stick (with a 2GB stick) in the lower slot is not going to be an option. The 1.67GHz G4 PB's can use a total of 2GB but only 1GB per slot.
