is there a utility for indexing archived files? - 2009/05/20 11:34my hard drive is full and i need to archive stuff on an external. is there a utility that will index the archived files/file names and extensions so a reference to them comes up in a search even if the archive drive is not connected?

Re:is there a utility for indexing archived files? - 2009/05/22 22:32thanks, but this isn't for a web site. my hd is full and i need to archive. i'd like to archive about 85% of everything and start fresh, pulling files back onto the hd only when i actually need /use them.
what i'm looking for is something to index what i put on the archive disk so that if i need--and then search for--it, it will tell me it is on that disk and i can bring it back to the hd.
i seem to recall OS8 and/or 9 having something like this, but i've no idea what it was/is called now or where to find it in os X.

Re:is there a utility for indexing archived files? - 2009/05/24 01:15Yes OS9 Apple key F key (Apple F) brings up Sherlock 2. OS10.4 Apple F will bring up a Search panel. There's also Spotlight top right hand corner.
