Crash Landing - 2009/05/18 15:56 Hi, recent Powerbook G4 owner, I'm really a PC guy, although, I guess that ain't too PC around here.

Anyway, this thing crashes, A LOT. With a little trolling on the net over the past year, it seems to be a pretty common problem, and, also seems to be not that fixable.

Any suggestions?????

Also, the HELP is not much help in just trying to learn how to drive one of these. Learning all by mysel, just by pushing buttons and seeing what blows up.

Anyway, can surf the net not bad, and, managed to burn a DVD from a file already loaded, haven't figured out yet how to load FROM a disc, and, then burn that.

My first main question, is, when you have a bunch of windows open, is there a keyboard way to close one without having to trackpad all the way over to the little red X button?? I find that a little time consuming and fiddly.

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/18 16:20 You can close an open application by using the command key and the q key together. Hope this helps. As to the crashes--how much memory do you have?

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/18 18:54 It says 512 ram.

Actually, I found Command W works.

The only good thing about the crashing, is, that it reboots REALLY QUICKLY. Nothing like my PC.

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/18 19:12 Hi, You might want to check this url for your particular Powerbook to determine the max memory it can use. It may well be that increasing the memory will help with your hanging problem. Ralph

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/18 23:08 Which model Powerbook do you have and what OS is it running ?

By crashing do you mean freezing up or actually crashing and rebooting ?

Crashing or freezing is not a common problem on any particular Mac. You may see a lot of posts about the same issues you are having but it won't be the model of Mac doing it. Give more detailed info and we can figure out what is happening and get a fix for it.

Re:Crash Landing - 2009/05/19 17:18 What OS are you running? Pre-X systems did tend to crash for a whole bunch of reasons. OS X, on the other hand, almost never crashes. I can't remember the last time I had a crash, in fact. However, if you're running with only 512 KB of RAM, you're going to get a lot of problems with applications that take a long while to start up and produce, at least in OS X, the spinning wheel that shows the system is thinking through what you told it to do. That's almost without exception a sign that you don't have enough RAM.

By the way, the Apple-W does not quit an application, but rather just closes the top window. To quit an application you do have to press Apple-Q.
