At the time the decision was made, did you think switching to Intel was a good idea or a bad one? Now that systems have been shipping for months, has your opinion changed or is it the same? Why or why not?

And obviously the switch ain't over yet since there's been no announcement of a desktop "pro" model (I assume that's because Apple has been waiting to use the Conroe chip, but who knows). There are still a lot of apps that need to be universalized, particularly Adobe apps like Photoshop and InDesign, and until that happens the new platform is going to be crippled. All that will no doubt work itself out, however, and from what I hear, the new computers are fast and capable, so that's all to the good.

Loosing Classic means that I have to keep PPC systems around forever to open old Quark and FrameMaker files (tried Sheep Shaver on a friend's Intel iMac and it's not fast or stable enough to use for real). People who think you can just convert that kind of thing to newer formats are insane. I had to get a Windows box when Adobe dropped FrameMaker for the Mac and and until Adobe gets around to making native versions of their software, I see no reason to upgrade. I don't think many pros will buy Intel Macs until Adobe makes native software. Those with old files might never be able to buy them.

I bought a Power Mac G5 and am happy with it, its fast, runs Classic when I need to a few times a month. Will be watching Intel and see what happens but won't be upgrading soon. A couple of years down the road maybe if I don't have to go entirely to Windows. I miss the Mac. :(

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:Discussion Q&A - Look Back on Intel Switch? - 2006/07/17 17:27 I work on a magazine, but a non profit one, so I would be happy to have the money for a new Intel Mac (I have a pretty new PC also, but still prefer to use my G4 iMac). I don't really have to deal with Classic files, but that would be a big downside for some I can see.

I don't really know if it was a good idea or not. I don't really see any major improvements so far, they're faster, but newer PowerPc Macs would be too. They can run Windows, but I don't really want to do that and have a PC if I need to. I was hoping they would be cheaper, but they're not cheaper either. I just think that Apple must know something we don't and it will make more sense later.
