network imac and g3? - 2009/04/06 21:22 I just bought this new intel imac with leopard os10.5 something. I was told that it would network with my old G3 beige mini tower through ethernet. I'm not so sure now that I've been reading about the intel and power pc difference.
My G3 has 233 mhz with 384 ram and has the old round serial ports. I have a drawing tablet, scanner, and vinyl cutting machine all hooked up to it. I archive my work from an internal zip drive. I mainly use photoshop3 and illustrator6, I know, it's now antiques, 20th century stuff, but it all worked good untill recently. I had a printer but it died and I cant find one with the old serial cables. Is it possible to network the 2 computers through ethernet? I dont have firewire on the G3. I Havent tried connecting the two because my G3 is crashing at start-up right now, thats another question for another forum though. I went to the apple store for a battery and came home with a new Imac too. Also, I have a sony digital cd camera, since the G3 didnt have usb ports, I always put the minicd.s in the cd drive to get the pics on my computer, will the camera transfer pics to my new IMAC from the usb cable? or will the mini cd's work with the ring in the cd drive?

It looks like I'm gonna have to buy new photoshop, illustrator, tablet, vinyl cutting software, dongle and usb cable? if I cant network my 2 macs?

Re:network imac and g3? - 2009/04/08 07:05 Yes you can network the two Macs using a router, hub or a cossover ethernet cable. You can set up file sharing but with the different OS"s it can be a little tricky.

What OS do you have on the G3 ?

You can add a USB PCI card to the G4 to use more recent printers but finding one with OS 8 or 9 drivers will be tough. I think you need OS 8.6 at least for USB/FW but it's been a while and I could be wrong on that. Possibly OS 8.1 will work.

It may be time to put the old Beige G3 to rest. If you are running OS 8.6 or later you could get a B&W G3 with built-in USB/FW. The B&W's sell petty cheap depending on your location and availability Your hard drive & OS/software will work in the B&W G3 (8.6 or later). The RAM will work if it's PC100 or 133 and the B&W will also run OS X up to 10.4.11 and makes networking/file sharing much easier. And you can avoid buying all new version of the Adobe apps which will cost a bundle. I'm pretty sure PS 3 & Illustrator 6 should run in OS 8 or 9 just fine. If not you can pick up used versions of later Adobe software cheap on eBay. I know PS 4 and Illustrator 7 both run in OS 9.

And I would avoid putting the mini disks into any slot load drives. You should be able to transfer via USB though.

Re:network imac and g3? - 2009/04/10 15:18 I have os9.1 on my G3. If I was to use the ethernet crossover cable, could I transfer .jpg pic's back and forth? or maybe eps. That's about all I'd need. When you say a router, are you talking about the kind thats like a modem? My son has it hooked to his pc for playing games and my Imac is using the wifi through airport. Can I put a usb card in the G3 (if I can find one) and still have the old round serial port for my vinyl cutter?

Thanks for your hepl, I appreciate you.
