SMU reset on G4? - 2009/03/23 09:28 I tried posting a few hours ago, but can't find it. I have a G4 that quit entirely. No response whatever (no light, no sound, nothing on monitor) a few hours after normal shutdown. Does the G4 have an SMU reset button, lke some G5's do, or anything like it? Any other thing I can try before declaring this one dead?

Re:SMU reset on G4? - 2009/03/23 21:13 Have read of MDD, if that is your model, acting up like this if the PRAM battery is completely dead. May be worthwhile doing a test on it.

Re:SMU reset on G4? - 2009/03/23 23:25 I think the importance of a good motherboard battery is exaggerated. Especially by people who post on the Apple Discussion boards like TexasMacMan. They seem to have a thing about batteries.

I have run many Macs with a dead battery and a few with no battery at all. It can cause some minor issues once it's unplugged from a power source but it will not keep it from booting. jcashion could try zapping the PRAM on start up to clear the PRAM settings but the CUDA/PMU switch will do the same thing.

Which G4 is it ?

Some have common PSU problems but could be the power switch also.

Re:SMU reset on G4? - 2009/03/24 21:39 It appearsto be the Gigabyte ethernet edition (best match of pics in the reference cited above). I tested the battery, which showed 3.6 V in place.
Also tested the input line and got 115 V AC at the computer end of the power cord. Pressed the button once, waited the 10 seconds and then got no action at all on attempting a start. Went through it all again a few minutes later. Still dead. Looks like it's the scrap heap for this one, but thank you very much for the tip. It's a lot easier to toss it knowing that I tried all I reasonably could.

Re:SMU reset on G4? - 2009/03/24 21:41 battery tested out at nominal 3.6V, but thanks for the tip. Tried pushing the reset button, which is set close to the battery, but it didn't help.
