Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/13 17:59 Ibook G4 1.25ghz starts up correctly to finder, however when attempting to run applications or mount DVD/CD's everything will freeze, sometimes immediately other times after being well into an application.
Only way to get it operating again is by force shut down.
Any subsequent restarts will result in the blue screen appearing with no further progress and no cursor present.
The ibook will ,from that point, only successful restart after remaining off for at least 5 minutes, then activity reverts to above problem all over again.
I suspect a problem with the board or joints that, upon warming/heating up,fail to properly connect with the resulting freezing (poor solder joints).
12" Ibook 1.25ghz 10.4.8 (tiger) 768mb (254-fixed+512-stick).
I have checked ram and its seating, works fine in another ibook.
Any helpful advice welcome.
Regards
mick

Re:Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/14 19:20 When freezing have you tried using 'Force Quit? After using Force Quit. Relaunch Finder. If that doesn't do any good. Reset PRAM on Start-up. If that doesn't help run Disc Permissions. If that also is ineffective use the Install CD and run Repair Disc.

Re:Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/16 04:42 Dear universe,
Thank you for your reply and kind advice, however as I have tried all that you suggest (again) and as the whole machine goes into this blue screen of "nothingness"and without any curser activity.
I am left with only one alternative, which is to force shut down (holding down the start up button until it turns off) and then I must leave it for at least five minutes before I can power it up again.
I have used Disk Warrior and it comes up with a good report.
I think my next step is to exchange hard drive and see what happens then.
I can start up in target mode and the HD will read and write so it may be OK after all,I might just pull it to pieces and re-seat / swapping some components around, check the battery and get it together again and see what happens then.
Thanks again for your assistance.
Kind Regards
Mick

Re:Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/17 20:47 Sounds like a heat issue. The fan may not be working and it's overheating or it could be other problems causing it to overheat.

Do you have a hardware test disk ? I think you can download some from Apple still.

If not I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar if you are near an Apple Store and they will do a quick diagnose for free.

Re:Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/20 19:12 Dear krowmagnum,
Thank you for your advice,I have the original install disk's which include the hardware test option.
The report was "all good" so I'm at a loss and far far away from any apple store for advice.
I haven't gone any further as yet regarding disassembly however, thats my next step now,I will check out the fan's operation ,dust accumulation and swap over the HD for another proven goer.
Thanks for your help.

Re:Ibook issue-what does this problem sound like? - 2009/03/21 13:42 I would try re-installing a fresh OS first. If that doesn't work I would try the hard drive swap next.
