Discussion Q&A - Mac Pro Features? - 2006/07/09 17:09
Rumor site Think Secret recently reported the possibility that Apple's Intel-based "Mac Pro" professional desktop systems will have a new case design and feature the Core 2 Duo processor.
What features do you expect the "Mac Pro" system to offer should it be released next month as anticipated?

Although I am by no means a typical Pro user, I know what I believe the MacIntel Pro needs... Smaller, narrower, shorter and thinner and shiny-er case. No fans. RamDisk, or more Solid State mass memory. The ability to run any version of Windows on BootCamp 2.0, (wishful thinking), which allows Windows OS to run full speed, within a window, simultaneously with Mac OS, at full speed, and with smart CPU, smart Clipboard and RAM sharing. The ability to install 16GB of RAM. The ability to rip a CD directly into RAM (not dependent on Hard drive speed). Built in media readers and A/V jacks more accessible. Multi-button Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. Onboard Coax input / output, TV, HDTV, and cable modem. WiFi multi-media remote, compatible with FrontRow and "Airtunes A/V" (ie Airtunes with more robust functionality and lower latency, allowing 'slinging' of more than just iTunes audio.) Ability to accept a cell phone SIM card, fax over bluetooth via cell phone, the ability to act as a bluetooth headset, and as a VoIP (and ViIP) headset. Long-range, multi-media, radio-frequency Remote has a monitor for many purposes, including monitoring system ops. Ability to remotely control certain system ops, including by cell phone, email and others (whole house entertainment, and eHouse, security, etc.) More media keys, not just Volume and Mute, but also Play, Pause, Skip Ahead, SlowMo, Channel Up/Down. Oh yeah, and it never causes the audio output balance to skew right, every so slowly, making me have to go into System Prefs and re-center the audio balance, like my G4 Tower and Powerbook do now.

2 core 2 duos sounds right, 16 gb of ram sounds reasonable, prob external sata ports to go with fw 800. would be sweet in a cube case like this, smaller but still with a bunch of bays.

I'd like to see a media card reader, expresscard 54 slots, and a firewire 800 port on the front. The case is really easy to upgrade so I hope they don't change it too much. - Mike

That article pretty much says what anyone could guess. The chip that Intel is releasing at the time and a new case. No surprises. I think ExpressCard 54 and a media card reader front would be nice but doubt Apple would do that. My question is with two core two duos (say that three times fast!!) would it be faster than the G5 is for existing Adobe programs?? It better be or I do not think pros will hurry to buy them.
Ray, wouldn't most of those be better for a high-er end iMac??

Yeah, actually I guess what I would really like would be those specs in a Tablet Mac, but I do appreciate the raw power of Apple's towers...
...I still haven't given up my G4 tower because of that, despite the fact that I bought a Powerbook G4 for the purpose of getting 'un-tethered.' But, what I found is that with all the benefits of the laptop, it really doesn't match the powerfully fast feel of working with the tower (is it my imagination? or is it the productivity of the extra pixel-real-estate?) Windows boxes four years younger than my Sawtooth don't give the rock-of-gibralter-steady performance of the Sawtooth (G4 tower.) Who knew that 500MHz MP PPC would feel faster than 3GHz Pentium? Not until test driving the Macbook Pro's have I felt a Mac that surpass that "oomph". I'm sure I'm crazy. Actually, I'm sure that the new MacIntel towers will provide power that cannot be harnessed by the existing software solutions currently available. Just as well, as I am still broke from getting the Powerbook, and I'm sure the Sawtooth will not fetch anything near what I feel it's still worth. By the time I can afford a dual-simultaneous-OS-booting tower, that can render a full Architectural 3D walkthrough, and burn it to DVD, all while my (potential) Homeowner waits, I'm sure that the Macintel Pro will be old news. But maybe it will pay for itself, and I guess that what makes it a Pro model. What I really need is a computer that is sooooo fast that it turns back time, and gives me enough free time to re-learn how to program, write my own, proprietary software title for Land Development and Construction Management entrepreneurs, and then other people will buy the latest Macs FOR me.
