airport card not responding in Clamshell - 2006/07/09 01:19 My granddaughter has opened a can of worms !
I bought this clamshell back in 2005 somewhere, tried to get it to connect to DSL, couldn't, put it back in the case it came in and put it under my bed, until this afternoon my granddaughter decides she would like to see if she could get the airport card that's installed in it to work, of course this doesn't work either. I really don't know how to get this thing to work, I've almost given up. Right now it's sitting next to my desktop iMac., & it's on I have a DSL connection only for the iMac, but it seems I can't have 2 computers on the same DSL connection, with out them ( my telephone company ) charging me for another hook-up, I think it stinks, because I hear that there is no charge for another hook-up with other companies, I'm going to look into this on Monday. I notice that the menu bar has the airport icon up there and when I click on it, it says " turn airport on ", which when I do, does absolutely nothing., I know from what my granddaughter tells me is that it should work with the number that's printed on the DSL box, in other words - communicating with it. I don't have a base station, and frankly wouldn't know if it would take the Original or the Extreme.
Their is another persons name in this iBook and I can't change it for the LIFE of me- this is JUST 1 of the reasons I've just about given up, it's a very well taken care of unit, in fact it's Pristine, cosmetically it's gorgeous, but It AIN'T workin' !, I need some expertise Please !

Re:airport card not responding in Clamshell - 2006/07/09 12:54 You have to have a wireless router of some sort to have Airport work. It doesn't have to be an Airport base station--any wireless router will work.

Re:airport card not responding in Clamshell - 2006/07/10 17:17 The big difference between G & B is speed. "B" networks transfer data at up to 11mbps while "G" has a standard rate of 54mbps. Some "G" can support up to 108mbps, but I have found that difficult to attain/maintain when downloading large files. You can usually pick up a "B" router for about $20-$50 - watch sales. "G" routers run about $50 - again watch sales. Now that I think of it, I have a G router you can have if youare willing to pay postage - say $5 for priority whereever you are... drop a line!

Re:airport card not responding in Clamshell - 2006/07/11 07:15 Figure out what kind of Airport card the iBook has. If it's a regular Airport, then it's a "b" card; if it's Airport Extreme, then it's a "g" card. Either card will work with either kind of router, although the regular Airport will transfer data at a slower rate than the Airport Extreme regardless of what kind of router you have.

Re:airport card not responding in Clamshell - 2006/07/11 16:52 Hi, On the system profiler, within the Applications folder on O.S.X ( I think ) it says: Airport card information

Wireless card type: Airport
Wireless card locale: U.S.A.
Wireless card Firmware Version: 9.52
Current Wireless Network: Airport is currently turned off

On the network it's written as: (for airport) Interface - en1

I have 64mb's of ' DIMMO ' memory built in and I also have DIMMI/J12 - 256 mb's - PC 100 - 2225

Capacity is: 11.12 GB.
available: 7.26 GB's, but this will change ! , I want to do a complete system change, right now it's got O.S. 9 & 10.3-Panther on it. I just want O.S.X-'cause I never use O.S.9 anymore.
