Can't install OS on G4 Quicksilver - 2008/11/19 09:11 I recently purchased a new internal 160g drive for my Quicksilver 733. (I posted on this subject last week).

At first the install disk couldn't "see" the new drive to install to. I tried everything including holding down the option key while booting up to see if the drive was being recognized - and low and behold it wasn't.

Next, I formatted the drive on another system and tried installing. This time, it saw the drive and tried to install.

About 5 minutes into the initial install I get an install error message telling me to restart and try again. Did this multiple times with no luck. It did this on both Tiger and Panther.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Re:Can't install OS on G4 Quicksilver - 2008/11/19 11:14 When you formatted the drive on the other machine did you format it to 128GB, or the entire 160GB ?

And what file system did you format it with ?

BTW: If there is no bootable OS on the drive or CD/DVD it won't show up by holding the option key.

Re:Can't install OS on G4 Quicksilver - 2008/11/19 11:48 I probably formatted it for the entire 160gb 'cause I don't know how to format for 128gb.

I formatted it using Disk Utility by erasing the disk and selecting Mac OS Journaled.

Re:Can't install OS on G4 Quicksilver - 2008/11/19 16:37 The 160GB partition is most likely the cause of the problems.

Reformat the drive again in the second machine, but make it two partitions. Go to the partitions tab in Disk Utility and select a Volume Scheme of 2 partitions. This will create two equal partitions but you can drag the main partition (Untitled 1) up to 128GB (127 to be safe probably)

Now go back to the Erase tab and erase the drive. The second smaller partition should not show up on your QS 733. Do a new install of the OS and it should work fine.
