Downloading issues - 2008/11/08 13:49Can someone please help? I’m running an Apple iMac G3/400 that is on 10.2.8 OSX. It came with IE as the browser but is that out of date I’m unable to load many pages. I’ve tried to download Mozilla Firefox 2 but the downloads keep going onto my desktop instead of going to the webpage. I suspect this is because the browser is too old. Anyway when I try to open the downloads from my desktop I’m being asked for an application to open it with. This is where I’m getting lost. If I remember rightly stuffit expander opened them automatically before. I don’t ever remember having this problem and would appreciate any help.

Re:Downloading issues - 2008/11/08 14:44From memory the recommended OS for Firefox is Panther OS X.3 and not Jaguar X.2. Stuffit Expander is still the standard unpackaging utility and is available as a free download ~ just do a Google.
Many downloads are also disk image files (.dmg) which should open from the desktop with a double click.

Re:Downloading issues - 2008/11/08 23:16There is something odd here. If you are running OSX then Safari should be available. Safari downloads and installs software.

Re:Downloading issues - 2008/11/09 14:53Safari 1.2 for OS X.2 is no linger available as a download as the Apple site automatically updates to 3.1.2.
Do you have the Jaguar install discs? If so see if the earlier Safari is on there.
Really the ideal answers to your problems is to purchase Tiger OS X.4, install minimum 500MB RAM and Safari will run nicel, as will Firefox for that matter.

Re:Downloading issues - 2008/11/09 17:51I don't think Safari was on all the OS 10.2 install disks. I seem to remember having to download Safari after I installed Jag from the CD's I have.
Have you tried the Apple Software update ?
If not, I think Safari should show up in the list if it's not installed on your Mac.
Go to the Apple menu and click on System Preferences. Find Software Update in the preferences box and click that. The updater will list all available updates for your system and Safari should be there. Download the updates and it should open the installer and work fine.
I think harry had the right idea about needing Stuffit Expander to open the files you already downloading. It should be in your applications or utilities folder and should have installed with the OS.
I would then use Safari to download Firefox 2 if you prefer Firefox over the older version of Safari. There are also other options like Opera for OS 10.2.
You can find lots of software including Opera here:
