Installing OSX 10.4 DVD - 2008/10/25 20:50 Friend sold me an extra copy of OSX 10.4 on DVD he bought and did not use on his other Mac. Unfortunately my G3 B&W has No DVD-Rom.
So I hook one up, the software loads and the OSX DVD Install icon shows on the desktop, but every time I go to Install It I Get The OSX Screen with the "Restart" Button.
Unfortunately I get that Over and Over Again. I "Restart" and its the same thing again. Now the friend tells me you have to have An Apple brand DVD-Rom hooked up ?.
This True ?.. Is there a way around this with a non-apple DVD-Rom ?. The present OSX Installed is 10.1.

Advice please!!! You guys r the experts!!! Thanks.

Re:Installing OSX 10.4 DVD - 2008/10/25 22:36 Sometimes the install DVD is machine specific, eMac, iMac. Check that the install DVD isn't machine specific.
Another factor is available ram. Check this URL

Re:Installing OSX 10.4 DVD - 2008/10/26 00:07 How is the DVD-ROM hooked up ? Internal or External ?

If it's an external USB drive it won't boot the Mac, only Firewire connected drives are PPC Mac bootable with only one Non-Intel Mac exception that I know of(Some CRT iMacs can boot from USB).

Many drives are Mac compatible and you don't need an Apple labeled drive. Drive compatibility on older Macs and OS's was a problem (mostly with SCSI) but about any IDE optical drives will work on a Mac and many if not most are bootable. If you have an internal DVD-ROM from a PC or can borrow one try that. (Or an External Firewire DVD-ROM)

The internal brands I have used in G3's & G4's are Lite-On, Pioneer, Sony, Phillips and Hitachi.

Re:Installing OSX 10.4 DVD - 2008/10/26 16:07 Another option is to look for a cheap DVD/Combo internal drive and plop that in the G3. They are quite cheap on auction sites as they are replaced with DVD DL burners. The brands Krowmagnum suggests are all recognised though personally prefer Pioneer gear.

If you go to xlr8yourmac.com you will find 'how to's' for the installation complete with photos of the procedure.
