Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/27 15:37 If it is running Tiger satisfactorily I would leave well enough alone. Maybe the firmware update is from Powerlogix and not an Apple update.

The Sawtooth, Gigabit Ethernet (from which the 500MHz DP CPU originates) and Digital Audio all use update 4.2.8 and Quicksilvers need no updates.

Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/27 21:35 So...
from the cards top side I get the Model No. as PFG4-1400-KR.
Lots of googling returned almost no hits so I removed the card from the heatsink and find three things
1) the Part No. is 963-745X-2100 Rev.3
2) The model is actually a S100-1400-S
3) On the actual CPU chip is 7450.

This turns out to be for the Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet series G4s
The chip is a 7450 unlike almost all the other 1.2 and 1.4 GHz PowerLogixcards I have seen or read about. This is OK because it means after upgrading the Apple firmware to 4.2.8 , I don't have to upgrade the PowerLogix firmware as well.
Power the Mac down install the new 1.4 CPU and boot up off the internal HD and 10.4....
Chime...
Screen...
A quick check of About This Mac sees the chip running at full speed. Yay !
Then I get the dreaded " You have to restart your mac " message. Boo. :thumbdn:
It reboots but the screen stays black. :thumbdn:

When I installed it , the card did not come with a fan so I have left the case open for testing with a 90mm Sunon fan sitting on top and blowing down on the heatsink. If I get this card running well I will get a better, more efficient fan installed.
At least I know that this CPU card works now , just not for long.
I also originally thought that I would need to install CPU Director, but apparently for the 7450 chips , this does not do anything.
Maybe needing to restart is caused by the fan not keeping the card cool enough.
Next step is to reapply some Arctic Silver thermal paste and see if that helps.
Any thoughts anyone as to what has happened ?

Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/31 21:26 Well after doing some more Googling and not finding the Powerlogix firmware update anywhere , I have had a reply from a guy in Singapore who is going to make a copy of his CD and post it to me.
I also have a 90x90x25 Panaflo fan on order to cool the CPU so hopefully by this time next week I'll have this up and running.
