PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/25 06:20 OK . So I have just inherited for nix a PowerLogix G4/1400 CPU upgrade card which may or may not work. The person who gave it to me is not a Mac guy but inherited a lot of tech gear when he took a small company over - routers , some old PCs external HDs etc etc. Anyway he gave this card to me and I thought it would be a worthwhile update for my Sawtooth. Nothing else came with the card - CD , manual etc
I've done a bit of research and apparently I need to find the PowerLogix firmware update for this card. The correct procedure is ...

1. Upgrade the apple firmware of the motherboard (the boot rom) to 4.2.8 or higher.
2. Upgrade the firmware again with Powerlogix’s proprietary software.
3. Remove the old processor.
4. Install the new processor.
5. Boot.

Doe anyone have any info about this firmware update or anything else , where I might find it , info about the settings re bus multipliers etc ?

Any info greatly appreciated.
Cheers , Stewie.

Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/25 18:47 The firmware update is available from the Apple web site, just do a Google and if you need it, you have to have OS 9.2 installed and running, download the file and instructions, and install which includes using the programmer's button on the front of the Mac.

If OS X in any version has been running 4.2.8f1 will have been installed. If there is an OS on the machine go to "About this Mac" More Info and the ROM version is the firmware.

Remove the heat sink clips, undo three screws and lift CPU off and replacement slips on and re-insert the screws, attach heat sink, if any, and also power take off on the CPU, if any.

The upgrade should then boot up, any problems zap the pram by rebooting and holding down OPTION, ALT (THE ONE WITH THE LITTLE APPLE LOGO ON IT) P and R all at the same time until you hear the second chime and release.

Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/26 01:24 Thanks for the additional link Krow.
After doing quite a bit of Googling, I've come up with most of the info for doing this so I think I am just about set.

Re:PowerLogix G4/1400 - 2008/10/26 20:41 Just a couple of questions remain for me though.
I should have explained that it is a Sawtooth G4/400 with a dual 500MHz ( from a dual stock Apple Sawtooth ) CPU card installed.
I'm also using 10.4 on this and have 2Gb Ram as well.
I checked the boot Rom version and it is3.2.2f1 so i guess I will have to update that for a start.
My dual 533MHz DA running 10.2.8 Jaguar has boot Rom version 4.1.8f5 on it.

1) Why does my Sawtooth with a newer version of OSX have an older version of the boot Rom ? I would have thought a newer OS would have a newer boot Rom?

2) If I update the firmware using first the Apple updated firmware and then the PowerLogix Rom ( as per the instructions ) and this card is found to be defective ( I have no way of knowing whether this card actually works as per my opening post ), can i simply go back to using the dual 500GHz chip , or is there some sort of uninstalling procedure /reflashing the firmware etc.

Thanks for the advice so far too.

Stewie
