I will have 512 ram and want to use a newer os either 10.3 with classic or 10.4 with classic which one would be a better choice of Os and what size harddrive would be best I was thinking of going with a 40 or 80 gb?

As for operating system, OS X.4 is much better but the 512MB memory is about the absolute minimum, and that is the most you can install alas.

First make sure the drive will work in the Wallstreet. Some newer drives may not and anything larger than 120GB will only show up as 128GB.

If you stick with a 40 or 80GB drive you should be ok but I would make sure it will work before buying it. Get one from a Mac retailer like OWC and you should have no problems with compatibility.

Second, the Wallstreet officially only supports up to OS 10.2.8 but with Xpostfacto you can install unsupported OS's.

I wouldn't try Tiger on a Wallstreet though. Your video RAM is very limited and with the slow 66MHz bus speed it will be a dog with Tiger. Panther should run ok and get you fairly current choices of software.

What CPU speed is your Wallstreet ? This will make a difference too. It can be easily upgraded to 300MHz with a later/faster CPU if you have a 233 or 266MHz model. There were also aftermarket CPU upgrades but I don't think anyone still sells them new. ebay or LEMSwaplist may be an option for finding a used upgrade but I wouldn't spend much money on it. You can get a nice 400MHz Lombard G3 Powerbook for less than $100 now. The Pismo G3's are selling fairly low now too and is the best Powerbook Apple ever made in my opinion.

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:Os 10.3.9 or 10.4 on wallstreet - 2009/04/19 12:35 I know it was heavier and slower, but I preferred my Wall Street to the Lombard which replaced it - so much so that I ended up switching back.

One of the features I especially liked on the older units was the interchangeability of the two bays, which the Lombard lost. Two battery bays means that you can run offline forever, so long as you have at least two batteries and an external charger, as I did. You just plug in a fresh battery before removing the old one, and keep going. On trans-Atlantic flights, with two batteries and a little charger that I would plug into the "electric razor" outlet in the airplane toilets, I could actually get in 6-8 hours of work, a feat that the newer machines denied me.
