It is time to upgrade from my sawtooth g4! I am undecided on which laptop i should get for the studies and web/ pics/ videos... i really like the 17" MBPro, but its kinda expensive... I guess my question is what model of Mac do you have and what do you do/ how well do you think it serves you?

Click here to see the profile of this user 		Re:new laptop in question - 2008/10/21 10:16 I have a now-3-year-old 1.5 GHz 12" PB, a size that I really really love and wish that Apple would bring back--but they won't. It does all I want, running 10.5, but I'm not heavily into image or film processing. A good friend of mine, who is heavily into image processing, has a MB--I don't know which model, but it's now a couple years old--and it works great for him. The new MB should be even more efficient with image processing. For video, though, I think a MBP would be the best bet--if you're seriously into it, that is. The 17", IMHO, is too large for a laptop. I'd plop down for the 15". Remember that as a soon-to-be college student, you get a student discount (I don't know whether folks in high school get the same kind of discount). Think also about a refurbished laptop--usually the previous generation, but with the same warranty as a new one, and with the possibility of getting Apple Care on top of that. They're good deal.

I recently had the opportunity to setup and work with a friends relatively new MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 15.4" 2.4GHz model - the non-glossy, anti-glare screen model.

It was simply way better than any of the other older portables that I had worked with in quite a while. The non-reflective screen was very easy to view, even from a wide angle - several times we had several people watching info and video playback from the screen. Also it was faster at processing than I had anticipated -- meaning that (a) the HD was speedy and (b) the processor fast -- I did not do any heavy multimedia manipulation, but it was very fast on all the standard office, web and media display apps (apple i-- aps, VLC, and the like).

We had selected that model for her because it had the anti-reflective screen. (She was able to pay the premium to get the MacBook Pro over the MacBook model). Sad to say I did not see any anti-reflective mention in the brand new just released October 08 portables from Apple. I am not a fan of glossy, though your opinion may be different.

So that model (MBP 15" Early 2008, anti-reflective) gets a strong thumbs up positive recommendation from me. Plus, it has Firewire, which has been dropped from the new MacBook Oct 08 model.

One thing I recommend, if you are buying new, or refurb from Apple: it is worth it, in my experience, to get the extended AppleCare package for the portable models. As with all the transporting, they are more likely to need some kind of repair down the road.

If the new macs are anything like my g4, they will be tougher than a tank.

I agree with the apple care, and would purchase it with any new computer, because problems do occur over time and it's always nice to have the peace of mind.

So now im thinking of a laptop anywhere between a good/ cared for/ used 1.5 to 1.67 GHz Aluminum PowerBook, or a 1st Generation MacBook.
