Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/22 19:18 Youtube doesn't use QT, as far as I know. Besides WMP and QT, RealPlayer, and Flash, which I forgot earlier, are essential. If there's some version of VLC that's available for 9.2, maybe you could try that as well. But I agree with Harry: upgrade to OS X and you won't have trouble finding the software that you need. If course, if you have software that functions on OS 9, you're going to have to shell out some bucks to replace it for X.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/22 19:58 Well I was curious yesterday and tried running Youtube on both the G4 with Classic and the B&WG3 running OS9. Dreadfully slow in loading. Gave up and did a Force quit. Running OSX.4.11 Youtube loaded and ran without problems, Media isn't installed . However I didn't bring up QT simply used Safari. With the OS9 used Explorer 5.1. All in all Youtube probably needs latest version of browsers.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/22 21:53 I have the same Mac and it works fine for internet surfing running OS 10.4.11 and handles video pretty well. It chokes on some High Def video but it is an old machine and technology has changed a lot since it was built.

The problem you are having is with the OS 9 browser you are using. There has been no updates or support for Mac Internet Explorer for a long time and the plug-ins you need like flash may not be available. Basically the internet technology has gone beyond what IE 5.1 can do, or OS 9 browsers in general.

If you want to surf the internet, especially video sites like youtube or news feeds you'll need a much more current browser than is available for OS 9.

Your 800MHz G4 is fully supported up to OS 10.4 and 1.25GB of RAM is more than enough for OS X. You could even run OS 10.5 on your G4 although it's not officially supported for that system by Apple.

Any modern browser for OS X like Safari or Firefox will run the on-line video but your internet connection will affect how well it streams.

My advise would be to get an OS 10.4 retail disk from eBay, Amazon.com or one of the retailers listed here on EM. You can just install OS X on the drive with your OS 9 system if you have enough empty space so you'll keep the OS 9 applications if you need them. In the meantime you could try either of these browsers that may work better for you.

Mozilla WamCom 1.3.1:

http://wamcom.org/

Or iCab 3.0.5 (most current browser for OS 9):

http://www.icab.de/dl.php

(There is an older version of Shockwave Flash (flash player) for these browsers but I couldn't get it to work)

BTW: The 800MHz G4 is a Quicksilver model, not the Digital Audio.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/24 01:40 Universe, Krownagnum, harryb and caciedo -
That you guys took the time and effort to look into my G4 questions and give me answers is amazing. Very unusual in this world of 'quickness' Thank you very much.

I'm afraid that I have a couple more unresolved issues. In looking for an OSX to purchase to replace my 9.2.2, it seemed that there were some prerequisites - I must already have 10 installed or Tiger would only install if I were upgrading from something else, etc.

Can I just purchase a standard OSX system, stick it in the slot and tell it to install? Must I update firmware before installing OSX? And the last question - Since you were kind enough to inform me -Duh- that my G4 was a Quicksilver, it seems my machine only has a CD-RW (BTW how do I open the dam slot) and since the OSX systems seem to be on DVDs, must I have an external drive to mount the new system?

Since you've all been so patient and informative, I wonder if there's anything I can do for any of you in return? I've spent my life in the music business - running labels, producing and writing for some artists you'd know - so if any of you could use some help or direction in the music area, I'd be happy to assist if I can.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/24 02:33 Re CD - on the keyboard top right-hand there are keys with figures on them. Press Triangle, it has a line under it. It also accepts DVD. Re OS X - buy OS 10.4.5 or 6 off ebay. Then you can upgrade it
