That you guys took the time and effort to look into my G4 questions and give me answers is amazing. Very unusual in this world of 'quickness' Thank you very much.

Must I update firmware before installing OSX? and is Apple Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger DVD Retail Version Xcode 2 the correct OS to begin with?

Since you've all been so patient and informative, I wonder if there's anything I can do for any of you in return? I've spent my life in the music business - running labels, producing and writing for some artists you'd know - so if any of you could use some help or direction in the music area, I'd be happy to assist if I can.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/24 17:58 Should be as it isn't machine specific i.e iMac.
Version OS10.4.6 is a good version to install as there are only a couple of upgrades, if my memory serves me right.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/24 20:59 About the system specific install cd: i had a OSX 10.2.x install cd set for an emac that i used on my iMac G3, and my B&W g3. The systems worked perfectly, no flaws, no glitches. I guess i just had good luck with it, but it worked for me.

Don't mention it... We are here to share our experiences and help if possible.

If you look at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395 there is no firmware update needed for the Quicksilver G4.

If the OS X install DVD has no machine model printed on it (iMac, eMac, iBook Powerbook etc..) it is a retail DVD. The disk should look like this.

There were CD sets available at an additional cost for users without a DVD drive but they are more rare. And as rich415 mentioned there are some machine specific install disks that will work on other Macs but there are not many. If the seller guarantees it will install you should be ok with a machine specific disk but the retail disk is your best bet.

The eMac install disk rich415 referred to were sold by some retailers at one time but I don't think any other machine specific disks will work across the Mac line since. I've never seen any Tiger installers that will work anyway.

I also had a OS 9.1 iMac disk that would work on any Mac too but most of the iMac disks would not. At least 90% of machine specific disk will only work on the Mac they were bundled with.

No need to do anything in return, your thanks and appreciation is enough. You are welcome to stick around and offer your experiences or advice. All of us were in your shoes at one time and have learned a great deal from this site and the wide range of topics discussed here.

It gets a little slow here at times so feel free to start new topics...

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/25 19:26 I should have checked the DVD I bought to install OS 10.4. It's the same as yours Version 10.4.6 Includes XCode2.It was the XCode bit that threw me.

There must be a multiplicity of keyboards. Krow mentions pressing F12.If I do that it brings up a calculator and a clock. As I wrote, on the keyboard I use the key top right hand corner opens the disk drive.

Re:Streaming Video on G4 800mhz Digital Audio - 2008/10/26 16:11 That version of Tiger will work, as it is the full retail install version. The rule of thumb is retail version disc are black and the system specific disc are gray.

For example, the system restore on say a G5 iMac may well be X.4.6, it will be a gray disc and is suitable for that model iMac ONLY.
