Dual-Boot Ubuntu 8.04 and Leopard? - 2008/10/20 17:34 Dear EveryMac.com members,

Hello - I am a new member, and I had a question about Ubuntu 8.04 on a 1st Generation 1.8 Ghz G5 iMac already running Leopard.

Do you folks know if I can install Ubuntu 8.04 on the same drive (250 Gb) that Leopard is on, in a separate partition, and dual-boot both?

Your help and advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu can be fun to play with but in my experience it has no advantage over OS X. You should try the Live CD version before going to all the trouble if you just want to check it out. The Live CD will run the machine without mucking with anything.

Ubuntu 8.0.4 does not have a PPC release so you'll need to get the latest version for a PPC (7.10 I think)

And yes you can make your G5 dual boot. Check this page for more info:

I did have an old G3 running both Ubuntu and OS X a few years ago but I can't remember the process, it was pretty easy though. Now I use Ubuntu on an x86 machine but not on my Mac so I can't really give you much advise on how, but the Ubuntu forums would be the place to start.

Keep us updated on your progress.
