Pismo booting issues - 2008/09/30 08:04 My Pismo is acting weird

First it wouldn't boot..unless i removed the battery and AC power, pressed the power button a few times to discharge the board. Then reconnecting the AC it would boot up. I wouldnt do this until after i'd removed the PRAM..

I've since bought a new PRAM and it's still doing the same damn thing..

Press the reset button at the back of the laptop, press the power button and up it will boot..From this point on it will reboot from shut down. But once i shut it down and remove the AC and try booting from battery. It refuses to power up. IF i reconnect the mains, it makes no difference. Until i press the reset. After which, if i press the power button a couple of times. It boots.

I've removed the processor board and given it a clean, i've checked the diagnostic in system profiler and it says PASSED.

Does anyone have any clues?

Thanks

Re:Pismo booting issues - 2008/10/01 15:33 Think i might have narrowed it down to the battery or MPU..

25 views but no replies, i'm really surprised nobody's had any experience with this..Hope my fault finding proves useful for someone :)

Re:Pismo booting issues - 2008/10/05 21:05 Knowing what is wrong with your Pismo could be a lottery. So many things could be causing this. Is it the original HD ? If so I would look at replacing it with a newer bigger one. Format it and install either OS9 or 10.2. Repair permissions and see how it goes.Install new and bigger Ram modules. ( 2 x 512mb modules = 1Gb total memory !) My Pismo was bought with the AC charger board causing problems. $10 and a new ( secondhand one ) fixed that along with a new HD and more memory. It has been rock solid for me for the last three years running Jaguar.

Re:Pismo booting issues - 2008/10/05 21:13 *Update*

Ok, so now i've narrowed it down to a series of possibilities..

1. PMU Board (Power card)
It is a known problem, that if your Pismo wont boot from a charged battery. The PMU is a prime suspect..Thus far the only evidence i have to prove any signs of fault are A. The operation system only ever says "Calculating" when trying to work out remaining battery time. B. What i've read on the Ifixit site about not booting from battery.

2. Daughter Card (Processor)

Having tested the card with the ram removed. I've ruled out funny memory and left me wondering if the CPU is ok. The L2 cache shows up fine in system profiler. Which from what i gather it wouldn't, if the board was funny.

3. The Logic board

The main board, could it be possible its developed a fault?
its certainly not out of the ordinary for a Pismo to suffer with a faulty board..

As it stands..i can only get the Pismo to boot after a reset. The situation is the same on mains or battery. Press reset and then press power twice and the machine springs to life

Re:Pismo booting issues - 2008/10/26 13:30 *UPDATE*

Well my new MPU arrived last week, i finally got around to fitting it today and sadly no change. The Pismo is still not booting after being shut down.

I can only assume that the problem lies with the CPU card or the power board.

Given how much i've now spent on the unit, i'm close to giving up on finding a solution. At this rate, i'll have replaced most of the key components of the Pismo before i've found whats causing the problem.

Since i last posted, i've been simply leaving the laptop in sleep mode. Which solves the problem of it rebooting.
