Unable to upgrade 10.2 to 10.3 - 2008/10/04 20:16My Apple iMac G3/400 has been resting in storage while I’ve been away studying the last 5 years. I’ve brought it back out with some affection and tried to upgrade with OSX Panther 10.3 so I can connect it to a Wireless 54G USB Adapter and access newer applications. Each time I load the cd’s and hold down the ‘c’ key the cd attempts to kick in but fails and ejects. Can someone please help me? I was sure that my specifications were all in order. I'm using Early 2001 - Indigo (M7683LL/A)

Re:Unable to upgrade 10.2 to 10.3 - 2008/10/04 21:54Does it boot to OS 10.2 ok ? If so try putting the 10.3 install disk in and select the CD as the start up disk in the system preferences. Or you can try selecting install/restart from the CD when it opens.
You should also reset the PRAM since it's been sitting a while:
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer. 2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4. 3. Turn on the computer. 4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. 5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. 6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

Re:Unable to upgrade 10.2 to 10.3 - 2008/10/05 08:06Thanks very much for your help. It actually boots up Jaguar 10.2 from a burnt disc but still will not recognise the 10.3 discs. I can’t start up from system preference because the disc ejects straight away. Can’t work out the PRAM setting because I don’t know which the Command, Option, P, and R keys are. However I don’t think I need to do that because it’s recognising jaguar. One other thing is that the discs (10.3) say they are for eMac. Would this make any difference?

Re:Unable to upgrade 10.2 to 10.3 - 2008/10/05 16:12Yep sounds like specific model discs only - are they a grey coloured and not black like the full retail install Panther discs?
Have seen in other forums eMac discs will and sometimes will not boot an iMac so you may be unlucky.

Re:Unable to upgrade 10.2 to 10.3 - 2008/10/06 08:33The eMac install disk is the problem.
Most machine specific disks like that will not work on anything but the machine they were bundled with. There are a few exceptions to the rule but not many. The OEM disks for that iMac would be OS 9.1 so you need to get a full retail install set as Harry mentioned.
One thing you need to be careful with on that iMac when installing OS X for the first time is to make sure the firmware has been updated. If not you could cause the video to go out and it's tough to get it working again.
If your iMac has never had OS X running on it you need to install the firmware update in OS 9.1 or 9.2. You should read this thread from the Apple discussions forums before proceeding.
