Wi-Fi capability Of The G3 - 2008/09/26 16:46I am new to the World of Mac so I am sure someone can help me. Friend gave me his Old Power Mac G3 (Blue & White).
I am curious to find out if I can use an internal 802G wi-fi card with it, or a USB wi-fi adapter. Is Wi-Fi possible with this system ?.
Any insight you may have on the subject is much appreciated (Yes, No, brand(s).
Thanks.

Re:Wi-Fi capability Of The G3 - 2008/09/26 19:43Wifi is possible on practically anything. On the B&W G3 you have 3 chioces: A USB adapter, a Ethernet bridge or a Mac compatible PCI wifi card.
The Wireless Ethernet Bridge will be the least hassles because it requires no software to run. Just plug it into the ethernet port and you have a wifi connection.
USB Wifi adapters and Wifi PCI cards can be found at any Mac retailer. Two sites that advertise on thsi page would be the place to look. OHS and OWC should both have something for your B&W G3 depending on the OS you are running.

NY: what OS is this Mac using?

Re:Wi-Fi capability Of The G3 - 2008/09/28 00:53Scuzball, as Krowmagnum noted, a wireless ethernet bridge requires no software to run and will work with MacOS 9 as well as MacOS X.
For more information, one might find it beneficial to refer to the MacOS 9/Classic Q&A, which covers this topic as well.
I hope this is helpful.

If you are using a USB wifi adapter there are not many with OS 9 drivers. I really doubt anyone is writing any OS 9 drivers for any new hardware. OS 9 is too outdated now to spend the time and money on writing the software.
Here is one made by Belkin but I don't know if they still make them. I'm sure you can find these on eBay pretty cheap still.

My system is running OX 10.2.
On my Regurlar PC I was running a Leadtek ENUWI-G2 usb wi-fi adapter. that worked fine for awhile. In its documentation is states that if u r running Mac 10.3 or 10.4 on A Mac their brand will work. But ya have to specify Apple OS (at retail) for the correct CD software/adapter.
Will give that a try.
Thanks for the replies.
