Re:Can not install OS 9.2.2 on my machine running - 2008/09/27 16:59 In order to install OS 9 on a machine running OS X, it is necessary to tick the little box at the time of formatting to install OS 9 drivers. No OS 9 drivers no install. To support krowmagnum's view partitioning is not necessary, my Mac techie at the time OS X evolved, using an iMac 350 slot loader, actually discouraged partitioning.

He believed, and I do not know if it is still a current thought, partitioning forced the drive to do twice as much work and like any electro-mechinical device, more work equals quicker wear equals faster failure.

His advice just install OS X and then OS9.

As you need to have OS 9 drivers installed, looks like a format of the drive coming up. Perhaps an external drive and back of the system would be the go?

Re:Can not install OS 9.2.2 on my machine running - 2008/09/27 20:18 Thanks Harry and Krow all highly informative but the external HD brings up the message that OS9 cannot be installed. Even if an attempt is made to partition the External Hd. I'd be delighted to installed OS9 because Word Perfect is used regularly and to avoid problems OSX on the internal original HD has to be loaded or OS 9. Using Classic via the External Hd is asking for trouble.
Thanks again
Rex.

Re:Can not install OS 9.2.2 on my machine running - 2008/09/27 22:42 On subject of "Installing OS 9 drivers" you DO NOT need to do this to install OS 9. You only need the OS 9 driver on a OS X hard drive IF you want to boot into the OS 9 system on that drive or access that drive from another hard drive with OS 9 running on it. You do not need to install any "OS 9 drivers" to install OS 9.

You can run "classic" with an OS 9 system that was installed without checking the "install OS 9 drivers" box in the OS X Disk Utility.

When installing OS 9 (retail Disk) after OS X you do need to check the "Perform clean install" in the OS 9 installer but it will install on the same partition as OS X and no OS 9 drivers need installed if you just want to use classic. If you are using a restore disk it's a much different process and gets more complicated.

Does the FW drive show up at all in Drive Setup when booted from an OS 9 CD ?

The only thing I can think of is the chipset on your firewire drive is not OS 9 compatible. Exactly what external enclosure, and what Mac are you doing this on ?

What chipset ? There may be a firmware update for the chipset in your enclosure.

Re:Can not install OS 9.2.2 on my machine running - 2008/09/28 01:14 Krow, thanks, if OS9.2.2 is selected for Startup and Run the External HD shows up on the OS 9 screen. But it cannot be selected for use. System Preferences has to be used. The External is a Sarotech Firewire connection.

Do you have OS 9.2.2 running on the internal drive or are you starting from a CD ?
