Should I get a Powebook G4 or iBook G3? - 2008/08/19 14:12 First off, thanks if you are reading this.

I am a mac user of about 1 year. I have a Macbook Pro as my computer at work. I was thinking about trading a guitar I have for an apple computer for my personal use. I have been offered 2 and am trying to decide which one, if either, would be suitable. My guitar has a value of $400-500.

Here is what I was offered:

Powerbook G4 Titanium, 15.4" LCD, 867mhz CPU, 30 GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD combo drive, 1GB RAM, Airport Card, OS X 10.3.9, Cosmetically 7 out of 10

OR

iBook G3, 14", 800mhz CPU, 30 GB HDD, 640 MB RAM, Airport Card, OS X 10.2.8, CD-RW/DVD combo drive, Cosmetically 9 out of 10.

Is either of these machines worth $400-500? If so, would it be better to take a PB in worse shape or an almost perfect iBook that is a little slower.

Thanks,

Re:Should I get a Powebook G4 or iBook G3? - 2008/08/20 01:37 I'm not sure either is a good trade for a $400-500 guitar.

This site will give you a decent if nto a little high estimate of current values on Macs:

http://www.mac2sell.net/

The G4 Powerbook values at $400 and that would be in good condition. And I think their values are a bit high too. $350 would be more like it in my opinion, and $300 for one in the condition you describe.

The iBooks value is shown at $160 which is definitely too low. More like $250-300 in good condition, maybe a little more.

These are really hard to put exact number so take it for what it's worth.

Personally I'd hold out for a later model G4 Aluminum Powerbook. Or a Titanium G4 Powerbook in better (very good) condition.

You could post a trade wanted ad here or LowEndMac.com has a good swap group called LEMSwap (google group) and you could place a wanted ad on it too.

Also keep in mind that computer will keep loosing value while the guitar probably won't, or at least not nearly as much.
