ati graphics for towers 9600 vs 9800 - 2008/08/10 22:33i'm not much of a gamer but i am looking to get the best graphics card available for the Mirror Door Dr, the 9600 pro i see is a 256mb graphics card and the 9800 pro i believe is 128mb, but newer, i take it? is the 9800 a better performer and why? i can't seem to find this info on my own so i wanted to ask you guys b/c i know many of you have one or the other

Re:ati graphics for towers 9600 vs 9800 - 2008/08/11 16:52For a MDD or FW800, particularly if DP, strongly suggest the 9600 which runs silent and cool with a heat sink only and no fan unit required, and about 90% the performance of the 9800.
Go to Apple Discussions and look for the problems with failed fan units on the 9800 resulting in fried cards, overheating and failed power supplies.

Re:ati graphics for towers 9600 vs 9800 - 2008/08/12 22:54If you don't need the 9800 there's no reason to spend more money. I had a 9600Pro in a Peecee and it was a nice card. It ran most games at the time pretty well too so you should be happy with the 9600 Radeon.
And as harry mentioned the fans can be a problem adn noisy. G4's are noisy enough already.
