Anyone still using their Power Computing clones? - 2006/05/24 21:38 Hi,

I have an old Power Computing Power Tower Pro, 200 mHz, 96 MB ram. It's been updated to Mac OS 9.2.2. I use it mainly for a scanning workstation and an MP3 jukebox (running iTunes v.1).

Does anyone else still use their Power Computing clones? If so, what for and have you modified/upgraded it in any way?

Have a good day,
Mat

Re:Anyone still using their Power Computing clones - 2006/05/24 22:30 Hi Mat
I've got a project on the bench at the moment, a PTP 225 MOBO with 1G Ram and a Newertech G3/400, just a dead power supply. I'm going to house it all (hopefully) in a Motorola Starmax tower that I bought on eBay, although the guy that sold it has been deregistered and I haven't heard from him for a while! Anyway I could probably put it all in an ATX case (??).

It will exist because it can! Probably run Yellow Dog Linux/ OS9.2.2 and maybe OsX via xPostFacto. Likewise it will serve for scanning via SCSI, run an ext. SCSI tower with CDROM - CDRW - DVD for loading cateloged graphics. iTunes will also run off an 18G SCSI HDD full of mp3's.

I figure if they work just fine, Don't trash them!

Cheers
Bernard

Re:Anyone still using their Power Computing clones - 2006/05/25 01:52 I still have my Power Computing with a Sonett G3 card running in my office. I use it for Word, Excel, etc, and it is hooked up to my LAN internet connection.

If it works, don't replace it!

Re:Anyone still using their Power Computing clones - 2006/06/12 21:58 I still use my olf PTPro 250 that's been upgraded over and over since I bought it in 1997 right before they closed down. The PTPro currently is running a scanning and tv/iTunes unit with tons of goodies.

It has a Sonnet 500MHz G3, with 1GB of RAM, two 9GB UW SCSI drives. I have 6 PCI slots filled and need more if you can believe that..... I have the ATI 16MB XClaim video card that has a TV tuner attached. I have both USB and Firewire cards, an Adaptec UW SCSI card, SoundBlaster Live sound card and a 10/100 ethernet card since the onboard is only 10.

The next thing I need is either a USB/Firewire combo PCI card or the Sonnet Trio card with an ATA bus on it for more drive space. I had four of the 9GB SCSI drives in it but it was hotter than an EasyBake oven so I pulled two of the drives.

I also have an Apple CD-ROM which makes booting from a CD so much easier. I added a Toshiba DVD-RAM drive and a Yamaha CD-RW for burning.

It's a great old machine and still my favorite Mac after all these years. I also have quite a collection of PowerComputing machines and parts if anybody needs anything or wants to get rid of anything.
