External monitor with a CRT tray loading iMac - 2008/06/05 03:41 Hi, I've a Rev c CRT tray-loading G3 iMac that has a failing monitor. So I've connected an external monitor after removing the back end of the iMac's case and disconnecting the internal monitor - just like here: <http://www.tuaw.com/2006/02/05/imac-meet-display/>. However the monitor I had on hand is just an old Apple Multiple Scan 15av which is not so great.

So I want to buy an LCD screen to use instead, but I need to know what resolutions the iMac's Rage Pro can support. I know it can do far more than it can with only the internal monitor, but damned if I can find a list of supported resolutions anywhere :-(

So - anyone know? And advice on what LCD to buy would be appreciated :-)

TIA,
Jamie Kahn Genet

Re:External monitor with a CRT tray loading iMac - 2008/06/05 21:05 You should be ok with a regular run of the mill 17" LCD running 1024x768 but anything more than that you may be asking for trouble.

Your iMac has a very limited selection of resolutions on the internal CRT and I'm not sure what will happen with something like an LCD that supports more resolutions. I would make sure you can return anything you buy just in case.

But honestly, it's time for a newer Mac. You can buy a nice used early model G4 for less than $100, and many for less than $50.00. You could put your iMac's hard drive in the G4 and keep running without a hitch.

Maybe it's time for your iMac to rest in peace.
