Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/15 09:12 Hi Scuzball
Thanks for the info, I got about halfway, I don't have a crossover cable so I tried setting it up using a router, when you say "Create a shared folder. Turn on file sharing, and select that folder" how do you mean exactly? Do you mean literally just create a folder on the desktop called 'Shared Folder'? I turned on the file sharing but it gave no choice of what to connect to.
When I went on the OSX mac I selected 'Connect to server' but there were no options to connect to anything, I typed in the different numbers from the G3 (the new username that I created, the IP address, the server address etc.) but nothing came up whatsoever.
Both lights on my router are on so I know that they are both connected to the router but they just don't seemt o be able to talk to each other.

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/16 10:45 i thought a shared folder already existed in the little tool bar down in os 9, when you turn on file sharing i believe it's down there & you can open it and move what files you wish to in it, idk for sure i haven't booted in 9 for 4 years. but scuz seems to be the techie to ask!

You could also open the File Sharing Panel to 'switch on' File Sharing. The panel also sets out what's what. If it's any help - in OS9 use Sherlock to bring up 'file sharing'.

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/19 00:02 Hi MattMac,
It's been a while since I did this.
You use the file sharing control panel in OS 9 to create the new user as a Network User. Still in File Sharing select the user and select Open. Make sure that, "allow user to connect to this computer," is selected.
You can name the shared folder anything you wish (if it was created with Network Setup during system installation it will be called "'your name's' shared files." With File Sharing on, select the folder (or volume) and Get Info. Select the sharing option of the Get Info window. Check, "Share this item and its contents." Under the Group/Users drop-down, select your new user and assign read/write privileges.
Then, on the OSX Mac, open System Preferences. Select Sharing and check Personal File Sharing. Open Network preferences and make sure AppleTalk is turned on. Close System Preferences.
Under Connect to Server in the Go menu, you should see the IP address for the other Mac. Select Connect (or just hit Return) and type in the user name and password you set up on the other Mac. That should allow you to mount the shared folder on your desktop.
I know it's a pain and there are so many things to get right, any one of which can cause lack of communication.
