Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/08 12:35 Hi
I was wondering if someone can help, i'm trying to network a G3 and G4 together. The G3 is running OS9.2 and the G4 is running 10.4.11, neither of them are on the internet but i've tried connecting them with an ethernet cable between them and 2 ethernet cables into a router I've also tried turning on the file sharing and Appletalk but neither computer seems to have the same control panels on it so I can't find any info online!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Cheers
Matt

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/08 18:09 i never had much luck getting os 9 & 10 to work via network, but my g3 was dual boot so i just moved whatever i needed to into os x on it. you can load x on it w/out loosing anything in 9.

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/08 19:02 Yes I've a G4 and a G3, which runs OS9.2. They run OK sharing internet but anything else hasn't worked. Even printer sharing has stuffed up. One thing that has proved practical is to use email to transfer data.

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/09 03:26 Thanks for the help, I shall check out the links and see if I can get it to work, all I literally want to do is transfer files back and forth and nothing else.

Re:Networking G3 and G4 together! - 2008/05/15 01:04 OK, I have done this with a beige G3 and a B&W G3. One runs Panther, the other 9.2.2.
It can be done with AppleTalk or with a hub for including a printer. I only share one folder and an old LaserWriter.
The trick is to set up the classic Mac first. Set up AppleTalk to communicate via ethernet. Create a shared folder. Turn on file sharing, and select that folder. In file sharing, create a new user, name it anything you wish, and give it a password.
Now, on the OSX Mac, enable file sharing. From the Go menu, select Connect to Server. Select the name of the other Mac. Type in the info for the user you just created. The shared folder will mount on your desktop.
If you wish to share a printer, you will need a hub and the IP addresses of each Mac.
To simply connect two Macs, use a crossover cable from port to port.
