pismo operating system - 2008/03/18 19:08
Can you tell me what OSX operating system a pismo can handle? They guy who fixed my computer said that it can't handle OSX10.4 but the guy I got the computer from said that he installed OSX 10.4
Okay, since I can't get any of my photoshop cs2 software to load (I get an ALERT. you can't load the software on this computer). Do I need to reformat the harddrive? If I do that, will the computer take my OSX 10.4
Can someone then tell me...how to reformat a harddrive and boot from a disk???
I really thought this computer was fixed but obviously, I still can't get online OR use my software.

This'll take a couple posts. You must have fixed the dead machine issues.
The second guy was right. You can run OS X 10.4 Tiger on your Pismo. Tiger needs a Mac with FireWire and at least 256 MB RAM, both of which the Pismo can hack. It can also run OS 9.1 and above (9.0.4 was a machine-specific release) for Classic apps.
Because the video is a scant 8 MB, you may have issues running CS2. And to make matters worse, the video on notebooks can't be upgraded.
If you're going to initialize the new HDD, start by inserting an OS 9 or OS X DVD or CD, and then boot the Pismo while holding C down. I'll walk through OS X first, assuming Tiger is intended. Panther and earlier are slightly different.
When you hold C, wait for the gray Apple to pop up before letting go. After about two minutes, the installer shows up. Select your language, and click the "forward arrow" button.
When this is done, click the Tools menu, then Disk Utility. Disk Utility starts.
In the left pane, you'll find a list of drives. Select the hard disk (which will be labeled with a model number like " 20.0GB WDC WD200BB-75CAA0") and look right.
You'll find five tabs in the right pane: First Aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, and Restore. Choose Partition, and make your choices. The default is to make one giant partition with the label "Untitled". Click Partition when finished tweaking.
The disk will then be partitioned and formatted as specified. You can then quit Disk Utility and move on to the rest of the install.

If you'll be doing OS 9 and OS X together, you'll want to install 9 first, so here's the walkthrough for Drive Setup.
As with OS X, insert the CD and reboot while holding C. When OS 9 starts, you'll see a "Happy Mac", and eventually the Finder with the Install CD open. From here, open the Utilities folder and start Drive Setup.
You'll see a window with a list of drives. Click the "(untitled)" item, and then click Initialize to proceed. You can then click Custom Setup in the next dialog to get a second dialog. Here, you can decide how many partitions you want and how to divide them up on the HDD. Click OK when finished, then click Initialize to get started. All partitions are formatted as you specify.
Quit Drive Setup, close the Utilities folder, and then start the Mac OS Install program. Then, just follow the Assistant's instructions.

Re:pismo operating system - 2008/03/19 09:18
Thanks so much Nate.
My only problem is, I only have the disk that came with my desktop computer. I tried loading them in my pismo and get an error... ALERT- this software can't be loaded on this computer.
I was told ..............."The system discs that Apple supplies with a new computer, the gray ones, are designed only for the computer they are shipped with. You need to get the generic, (NOT gray) system discs that Apple sells at retail."
I would have to purchase OSX 10.3 or 10.4 retail version. Or find a friend who has the retail version that can burn it for me to a disk. I've put quite a bit of money out already to "fix" the pismo...I just can't buy it right now. So...I'm screwed.
Thanks again for the info. I've printed it out so when I get the right system I can load it myself. cindel

Heads up! If the PowerBook Firmware Update 4.1.8 has not been applied, you will have to find a copy of OS 9 before you can load OS X 10.2 Jaguar or a later version of OS X. To check whether you have the proper firmware without an OS, enter Open Firmware mode by starting with the Command, Option, O and F keys held. The firmware version is displayed at the top of the screen in this mode.
Sometimes, bad or low-quality memory can cause a Mac to kick into Open Firmware mode unannounced. Should this occur, your only recourse is to remove or replace the defective RAM with RAM qualified for the Pismo.

Yes, The machine specific installer disks will only work in the machine it was made for. There are a couple of exceptions to the rule but you will need the full retail version for the Pismo. There is just no other option.
You can find used install disks for Panther fairly cheap now and is much better suited to the Pismo than Tiger because of the limited CPU and graphics chip.
Are you sure you want to run CS2 on a Pismo ? It's going to be painfully slow on a G3.
