Gray screen problem - 2008/05/01 19:44
I'm trying to troubleshoot a friend's iMac. When you turn it on, a gray screen comes up and stays there. After a minute and a half, the screen flashes white for about two seconds, then after almost three minutes, a folder icon with a question mark comes up, alternating with a folder with a Mac/face symbol. It's a second generation iMac (I think) running OS 10.4. It's booted up before.
I've perused a few forums, and one suggestion I heard was to boot up with the CD, then go to the System Preferences and make sure that the correct Startup Disk is selected, and that this will solve the problem. However, when I try to boot up with the disc, it won't take. The CD/DVD player just whirs for a bit and the gray screen remains unchanged.
I don't own Disc Warrior or Norton, and I was hoping to avoid taking it to the Apple Store if at all possible. If I did have Disc Warrior, though, I'm not sure it would even help me, since it appears I can't boot from the CD.
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.
