Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/22 22:58
This has nothing to do with "free markets". You can buy whatever computer you want and there are plenty of choices. That is a free market.
This has to do with a hardware manufacturer having the right to keep control of the software that runs on it's hardware. When you pay for the Mac OS you do not own it, you merely own a license to use it and with that license comes conditions.
Comparing this to Microsoft is way off. Just try to install XP on another computer and see what happens in 30 days In fact you cannot legally sell your copy of the Windoze disk without including a piece of hardware to go with it. If the new owner of the disk wants to use the OS they will have to call M$ to get it activated, after convincing them the OS is no longer on another computer.
You think Apple EULA is bad, take a hard look at Microsoft's EULA.
If you want an OS you can do whatever you want with it get one of the open source Linux flavors like Ubuntu.
There is a reason the Mac OS license is cheaper than Windoze, even though it's a better OS and they sell far less. Apple is not making money on the OS, they make their money on hardware sales.
