Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/22 19:56 The question should we stick by the Apple product is the very reason why the company will pursue this through the courts and, as the OS and design is their property solely, their can be only one outcome.

Those of us who were caught up in the genuine clone days of the nineties will recall there were heaps of problems with authorized clones - how does one think this will go with an unauthorized manufacturer?

Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/22 20:53 Well, I guess I side with the so-called "free market" here. Don't really care what Apple's contractual language is, I think the courts have already decided that you can't restrict a user's and/or resellers right to put software on a piece of hardware. If someone designs a "hackintosh" which works with off-the-shelf Intel components, and runs MacOS, why should they (Apple) bitch? Because the end-user isn't getting the full "Mac experience"? Well, yeah, ya get what ya pay for, and those who buy cheap clones will find, more than likely, that the integrated offering from Apple is the best. But, I'd say that as long as those copies of OSX running on the "Hack" are licensed, bought and paid for, Apple shouldn't complain. A little company called Microsoft somehow managed to become a lumbering financial behemoth licensing and selling nothing but software. Kinda makes me go "hmmmmm".

Personally, I'd take a wary eye to buying any Hackintoshes. I had some bad experiences with the PowerPC clones...but if they'd make a MacPro with double the expansion slots, I'd have to look seriously, because IMHO, the MacPro (and my venerable G5/dual 2) suffer from a severe lack of expansion room.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/22 22:58 This has nothing to do with "free markets". You can buy whatever computer you want and there are plenty of choices. That is a free market.

This has to do with a hardware manufacturer having the right to keep control of the software that runs on it's hardware. When you pay for the Mac OS you do not own it, you merely own a license to use it and with that license comes conditions.

Comparing this to Microsoft is way off. Just try to install XP on another computer and see what happens in 30 days In fact you cannot legally sell your copy of the Windoze disk without including a piece of hardware to go with it. If the new owner of the disk wants to use the OS they will have to call M$ to get it activated, after convincing them the OS is no longer on another computer.

You think Apple EULA is bad, take a hard look at Microsoft's EULA.

If you want an OS you can do whatever you want with it get one of the open source Linux flavors like Ubuntu.

There is a reason the Mac OS license is cheaper than Windoze, even though it's a better OS and they sell far less. Apple is not making money on the OS, they make their money on hardware sales.

Point is...they don't.

And, Mr. Crabby, I don't want anything...I'm perfectly happy with my Mac. But I also stand for personal, and consumer, rights. You pay your money, you get to do whatever you want. You buy the flag, you can burn it. Someone makes an Intel-based machine that just happens to run MacOS, and does so while paying all patents, royalties, license fees, etc, more power to 'em. That's the marketplace.

Sorry you feel so threatened.

Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/23 00:47 MikeJaz2,

Keep it civil -- differences of opinion are great as it keeps discussion interesting, but avoid personal attacks. Thanks.

Cheers,

Re:Discussion Q&A - Unauthorized Clones? - 2008/04/23 01:20 I beleive that clones will lead to the reason I am looking to get away from a PC, problems like lock ups, non-responsvie programs, patchs and not fixes.. I have pretty well decided to buy a Mac Book from the refurbusished store, can save alitte and still get a warranty until we see if we like the Mac..I don't have enough computer knowledge to feel comfortable buying a used computer from someone I don't know..there seems to be some good deals out there but I don't know...thanks for all the help and shared knowledge.. God bless
