Clock battery on 6500/225 - 2006/06/23 15:15OK, here goes. I have a Power Macintosh 6500 / 225. I need a new clock battery for it. But I can't seem to find anyplace that would like to sell me a clock battery (I would like a lithium battery, but alkaline is good) and I'm not quite sure how to keep it stuck to the logic board. I know how it plugs in, but... I'll just list what I need below.
1. I need a brand new clock battery that will work with a Power Mac 6500
2. I need installation instructions so that I can put the battery into the Power Mac.
Please, any help will be appreciated
Thank you, Edward J.

Re:Clock battery on 6500/225 - 2006/06/23 16:09More than three years ago, i had a simmilar problem. Let's start from the end of your question. You can find instructions for taking out the motherboard from your 6500 here: http://www.zone6400.com/. You can find the battery placement. It's a square one with two lines. Red for + and black for -.
Be sure to make a drawing which gives no place to mistake to connect the new battery the same way the old one is now.
Now, the battery, if you can't find one or think it is too expensive, you can get a Radio Shack 3 AAA or 3 AA battery case. Just cut the connection from the old battery and make a soldering job to the red line to the + line from the case and do the same with the black and - one. Put three 1.5 volts (alkalines work well) in the case and cover it with electric tape, this, for avoiding leakages to affect your motherboard and avoid the metallic batteries to touch somewhere.
Put a velcro piece firmly at the back of your new battery and connect it the way it was.
Since i did it my old tursty 6500 is working and gives no problem. The cost was 10 percent to the cost of a brand new battery here in Mexico.

Re:Clock battery on 6500/225 - 2006/06/23 17:20That sounds like it would work. How much did it cost for you to do it? Oh, and I know how to get the logic board out of my 6500, I just needed to know how to get the battery off of it without damaging the board. Thank you for the help!

The battery is held on with velcro so just pull hard on it and it will come loose.
You can find 4.5v batteries on eBay, or do as macaco suggested.
You can also take a cheap 9v battery apart and inside there are 6 cells. I have soldered 3 of the battery cells together in-line and connect your old battery line to it. As long as it's 4.5v it doesn't matter how you get there.
Some 9v batterys have flat cells and some have round cells a little smaller than AAA batteries. The cheapo batteries tend to have the round cells. That's the cheapest way to go but takes some time to make.

Re:Clock battery on 6500/225 - 2006/06/25 17:59I would like to thank you guys very much for the help, the guys on the other BB just said f off and kind of pushed me away. I think I will go with putting three AAs together. It should be really easy and it will provide a bit more modularity, right? Will I need to wire them in series or parallel? I know all the polarities and everything, but I just need to know that because I am new to this.

Re:Clock battery on 6500/225 - 2006/06/26 21:52The batteries need to be in a series to get 4.5V. You can get cheap plastic holders for batteries at Radio Shack if you don't want to solder the batteries together.
